Let me take you on a journey behind the scenes and into the mind of the man who brought you the official music video ‘Marama Dina’ by Marama.
Wilo Usuramo, a very familiar name in the entertainment industry with a very vast music influence.
In a post published on his personal page, Wilo said that it was not easy to create a concept that would suit ‘Marama Dina’ as it is an anthem of unity and embodies the essence of female solidarity, resilience, and the beauty of womanhood.
During a relaxing video game session that turned into a journey of self reflection. As his mind wandered into the past, he thought about the four women in his life “who not only raised me but also instilled values, morals, and discipline at a young age” he shared.
We begin with his mother, a single parent at that time, raised him and his siblings with very little but managed to shower them with love and care while studying and climbing the ladder in education; she is now a lecturer at USP.
We sail forth to his aunt Joana, a woman of strength who had her fair share of challenges while looking after her family and maintaining a teaching career. Wilo was heading down a dark path when his aunt took him in and taught him discipline, how to read and instilled a sense of responsibility and accountability. “Despite her struggles, she still looks after me and her family” he wrote.
A heaven sent angel, aunt Emily Asaph instilled faith and God’s seed in his life. She was stern and straight forward with her advice. She shed a light that led Wilo to church where he learned how to be a man with her guidance. “Even when she had nothing, she took me in and raised me through my teens and into my twenties” he shared.
From the past into the present where we meet his wife who showered him with unconditional love and made him into a greater man, husband and father. ” I’ve seen her juggle our marriage, family, school, and work with grace, something I couldn’t handle myself. She is a superwoman, just like my mum, Aunt Joana, and Aunt Emily” powerful and emotional sentiments he shared.
“These four women juggle everything while climbing the ladder to their own success, and I believe they haven’t been given the recognition they deserve. They are amazing women in my life” he shared.
These are the women that inspired the concept of the Marama Dina Music Video.
It is a celebration of women “like a painting, depending on who views it, they can draw their own inspiration from it” he wrote.
The different aspects of the video have meanings that perfectly describe women and girls:
