A Man Is Never Truly Gone While His Name Is Spoken: Remembering Kasiano Raturaga
Written by Alex Elbourne on January 7, 2025
Kasi to some. Kasiano on his birth certificate. BK (Big Kas) to his family, Tata to his kids. Kasiano Atafaiva Brian Raturaga took his step into the Great Unknown on the 5th of April, 2024. Not long after, his former rugby club in the UK Broadstreet RFC announced that they would be holding the Kasiano 3 Way Rugby Tournament to raise money for Kasi’s wife Troydyn and their sons Semi and Ioane. Of course, in a sense, raising money was also an opportunity for those who knew and loved him to get together and remember him, to say his name. As Andy McGrory, one of Kasi’s closest friends put it “…a bunch of players who probably shouldn’t be playing any more..” but did because Kasiano was that important to them.
The three teams that took part in the tournament were THE KASIANOS Vs COVENTRY WELSH VETS Vs BROADSTREET VETS
In addition to the rugby, raffle tickets were available with all money being raised to help Kasi’s family. The day was a huge success with over 3000 pounds being raised. Fittingly, Andy described Kasi as someone who
…by all accounts was one of those special people who had the ability to lift others around him not for credit but because it was in his nature. The measure of who he is can be seen in how those who he has left behind have reacted…
While Kasi’s family go through the sorrow of losing someone so special, someone who made others around him feel loved and appreciated there is also joy in celebrating a life well lived if not lived long enough.
And they speak his name. Always.
