Sculpture of Euthanized Walrus, Freya, Revealed

Norway’scapital, Oslo, has unveiled a statue of a walrus who was put down last August due to public safety concerns. The bronze sculpture depicts Freya lying on her side on a shore, calling it “For Our Sins”. An online campaign raised $25,000 to make the statue. Freya was a popular attraction but was put down due to the mammal rising to fame after clambering onto boats to sunbathe – sometimes sinking them. The local authorities later said people had ignored warnings not to get too close to the animal, putting her and themselves at risk. On one occasion, police blocked off a bathing area after the walrus chased a woman into the water, local media reported at the time.
