The first ever female British and Irish Lions tour accortding to reports may soon be a reality at the conclusion of a two-year feasibility study soon.
The Telegraph has reported that what the Women’s Lions feasibility group will determine massive news for the women’s game, particularly after an exhilarating Rugby World Cup 2021.
The group had to ascertain whether a tour was financially viable, if suitable opposition could be found and if it could slot well into the women’s calendar.
There is concerns the team will be dominated by the England Red Roses players. However, there is hope that by creating a touring side, competition and investment will increase across the four unions involved.
It is unlikely that a women’s Lions tour would replicate or mirror the men’s. The men are due to tour Australia next in 2025 while possible women’s destinations include France and New Zealand given their playing strength.
This is definitely huge news for the women’s game.
With that in mind would it not be great to have the Female British and Irish Lions team play Fijiana 15s. Would be such a great boost for the Fijiana 15’s team. And never know there might be an interesting result of the game.
Brings to mind the First Flying Fijian game with British and Irish Lions at home in 1977.
