‘Barbie’ dominates box office in opening weekend

Raking in a stunning sum of USD 155 million domestically over the weekend, Greta Gerwig’s “Barbie” has been dubbed as having the largest opening weekend of 2023 with the biggest-ever debut for a female directior.

Totaling USD 302 million in North America, Barbenheimer had the fourth highest-grossing weekend of all time.

“Barbie” trailed behind with a whopping USD 80.5 million domestically over the weekend with both movies essentially doubling predictions made weeks before its premieres.

Senior media analyst, Paul Dergarabedian said that it is unprecedented to not only have two films do so well but, also to help each other with the Barbenheimer trend.

“Both can be considered absolute homerun hits, and both are gonna perform in the coming weeks in a different way,” Dergarabedian said.

The two movies can enjoy a summer with little competition, particularly “Barbie” since there haven’t been female-driven blockbusters since “The Little Mermaid.”
